Ritual Spell for Winter Solstice

Altar Supplies: Incense, censer, chalice of water, salt, pentacle, dagger, 4 element candles, cauldron, chalice of wine, bell.
Yellow candle in the cauldron with a red, a white and a black candle arranged around it.

“I Consecrate this circle of power to the ancient Gods. Here may the manifest and bless their child .”

Move back to the altar, facing east. Raise your dagger or wand in greeting, say:

“This is a time that is not a time, in a place that is not a place, on a day that is not a day, I stand at the threshold between the worlds, before the veil of the Mysteries.
May the Ancient Ones, help and protect me on my magical journey.”

Set the water chalice on the pentacle disk . Hold your dagger over it and say:

“Great Mother, bless this creature of water to your service. May I always remember the cauldron waters if rebirth.”
“Great Mother, bless this creature of earth, its many forms and beings.”

Sprinkle a little salt into the water, then hold the chalice up high and say:

“Great Father, bless this creature of Fire to your service.”
“May I always remember the sacred Fire that dances within the form of every creation.”

Hold your dagger over the incense saying:

“Great Father, Bless this creature of Air to your service”
“May I always listen to the spirit winds that bring me the voices of the Ancient Ones.”

Put a little incense on the lighted charcoal. Touch the burner briefly to the pentacle disk, then raise, the burner high, saying:

“Great Father, I give you honor!”

Carry the burner around the circle clockwise, beginning in the east. Return it to the altar. Go to the eastern quarter of the circle.

Light the red candle and hold your hand up in greeting. You may also salute the Element with your dagger, sword or wand instead of your hand:

“I call upon you, Power of Fire, to witness this rite and to guard this circle.”

In the southern quarter, light the yellow candle and greet the Element:

“I Call upon you Power of Earth, to witness this rite and to guard this circle”

In the western quarter, light the black candle and hold up your hand in greeting:

“I call upon you Power of Water, to witness this rite and to guard this circle”

End by going to the north; light the white candle and greet the Element:

“I call upon your Power of Air, to witness this rite and to guard this circle”

Move back to the central altar, and stand facing east. Raise your arms in greeting:

“This circle is bound, with power all around”
“Between the worlds I stand with protection at hand”

Proceed with spellworking or ceremony.

1. Cast Circle of protection:

Visualize creating a circle of light and energy. Silver- Blue flame.
Beginning in the East Walk clock-wise around the circle, sprinkling a salt-water mixture. While doing so, say:

“Salt and water by casting thee, no spell nor unknown purpose be, except in true accord with me, and as my will, so mote it be!”

Take the incense and, beginning in the East, walk clock-wise around the circle, allowing the smoke from the incense to cleanse the circle.

While doing so, say, “I banish from this circle, all unclean and evil forces”.

Walk the circle a second time.

“I cast this circle to protect us from all negative and positive energy and forces on any level that may come to do us harm. I draw into this circle only energies and forces that are right and good for me and the most correct for my work.”

Walk the circle a third time and say, “I have created a sacred space. So mote it Be.”

Consecrate circle and altar: “I consecrate this circle of power to the ancient gods. Here may they manifest & bless this child.”

3. Call to Quarters:

To the East, I invite the powers of Fire To burn away regrets and shine gentle rays upon me for growth. I invite firedrakes, the dawn, the spring. I do summon, stir and call you up- come! Be welcome in this rite. Blessed Be.

To the South, I invite the powers of Earth to give your renewing strength to bury all ills and open new paths before me. I invite the gnomes, the noon, the summer. I do summon, stir and call you up- come! Be welcome in this rite. Blessed Be.

To the West, I invite the powers of Air To blow out the old and bring in the new on your winds of change. I invite the sprites, the twilight, the autumn. I do summon, stir and call you up- come! Be welcome in this rite. Blessed Be.

To the North, I invite the powers of Water To cleanse me of negativity and purify my thoughts. I invite the mermaids, the midnight, the winter. I do summon, stir and call you up- come! Be welcome in this rite. Blessed Be.

4. Ring the bell 3 times and say:

This is winter solstice, the longest night of the year. Darkness reigns triumphant, yet gives away and changes into light. The sun king has gone. Yet, within the sacred cauldron of rebirth he is once more transformed into the newborn divine child of light.

5. Put a little more incense in the censer and say:

All is cold, and I await the coming of dawn. As the sun rises, the triple goddess once more gives birth to the divine child. In silence and wonder I stand before the sacred cauldron of rebirth, knowing that one day I too must pass through the cauldron and be reborn. For this I now give honor to the triple goddess.

6. Light the yellow candle near the cauldron and say:

Yellow is for the maiden. May you plant your seeds of joy and new beginnings within my life.

7. Light the red candle near the cauldron and say:

Red is for the mother. May you plant your seeds of joy and new beginnings within my life.

8. Light the white candle near the cauldron and say:

White is for the newborn lord of the forests, the divine sun child who comes once more into the world. I welcome you, child and consort of the goddess.

9. Take the bell and go to the east. Ring the bell once and say:

Rejoice o powers of fire! Welcome the divine child.

10. Take the bell and go to the south. Ring the bell once and say:

Rejoice o powers of earth! Welcome the divine child.

11. Take the bell and go to the west. Ring the bell once and say:

Rejoice o powers of air! Welcome the divine child.

12. Take the bell and go to the north. Ring the bell once and say:

Rejoice o powers of water! Welcome the divine child.

13. Go back to the altar and stand facing east. Ring the bell 3 times and say:

Hail, o god of the woodlands and new life! I give you honor and ask your blessing.

14. Stand in silence to receive the blessing. Ring the bell 3 times again and say:

Hail, triple goddess, bringer of light out of darkness and new life out of the cauldron of rebirth. I give you honor and ask your blessing.

15. Stand in silence to receive the blessing. Place the wine chalice on the pentacle for a moment and lift it high and say:

To the old gods! Merry meet and merry part and merry meet again.

16. Drink the wine, save some to put outside for the little people.

18. When finished: Release the 4 Quarters: Walk in a counter-clockwise circle starting at East

19. Open the circle: Cut the circle with knife and Use hand and walk counter-clockwise beginning at the East and say:

I send this circle into the cosmos to do my bidding, the circle is undone but not broken.

When everything is completed, hold your hand or dagger over the altar and say:

“By the power of the ancient Gods, I bind all the power within this circle Into this spell, So mote it be.”

When you are ready to end the ritual. go to the east and extinguish the yellow candle. Say:

“Depart in peace, O Powers of Fire. My Thanks and blessings”

Go to the south, extinguish the red candle . Say:

“Depart in peace. O Powers of Earth. My Thanks and blessings”

Go to the East, extinguish the white candle and say:

“Depart in peace. O Power of Air. My Thanks and blessings”

Go to the North, extinguish the black candle and say:

“Depart in peace, O Power of Water. My Thanks and blessings”

Return to the altar in the center and say:

“To all beings and powers of the visible and invisible, depart in peace. May there always be harmony between us. My thanks and blessings”

Cut the circle with a backwards movement of your dagger, or sword to release all remaining traces of power for manifestation. Say:

“This circle is open, yet ever it remains a circle. Around and through me always flows its magical power.”
